ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — Hurricane victims are running out of time if they need help covering their storm-damaged roofs.
The application window to apply for Operation Blue Roof ends on Thursday, Nov. 14.
Unfortunately, a lot of people still have damage to their roofs, but this free program is a way to get a temporary fix.
If you look around Pinellas County, many people's lives still sit on the curbs, from the bottom of a house to the roof, there is damage.
"It was raining on the inside of the walls," said Taren Harris, a resident. "It was the strangest thing. That's what we suffered. The shingles went all the way down to the neighbor's house, you know?"
To try and offer a temporary solution to help with roof damage, the Army Corps of Engineers has this program.
Blue Roof is not a tarp, but a fiber-reinforced sheeting that covers roof damage.
"What this does is buy you a little bit more time where you have quality material installed by quality professionals to be able to give you that peace of mind that you need," said Maj. Matthew Westcott with U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
This program is for primary residences with less than 50% of roof framing damage. The roof must be standard shingles or a similar material, not slate or clay tile.
Vacation rentals do not qualify.
Metal roofs and mobile homes are being considered on a case-by-case basis.
Many homeowners told 8 On Your Side, back in October, that they will take any solution they can.
"I'm in dire need of it, so I don't know if it will start leaking or nothing, but it's been stressful," said Susan Quarterman, who owns a home.
Thursday is the last day people can apply. If you need to fill out an application, click here, or by calling 888-ROOF-BLU.
