LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WFLA) — Firefighters in Kentucky worked to save a man after a structure collapsed in downtown Louisville Thursday, officials said.

The incident happened at about 11:40 a.m. at a construction site in Louisville while six contract laborers were working. The other five workers were said to be safe.

According to Louisville Fire Chief Brian O'Neill, five different fire companies were at the scene to make sure there are "fresh hands" to to extract the victim as safely as possible.

However, it could take up to three hours to get to the trapped man.

"This is a very, very slow process," O'Neill said, explaining that any shift in the rubble could cause other debris to move.

The chief said the victim appeared to be speaking and breathing after falling 10 to 12 feet, but the extent of his injuries are not yet known.
