Florida deputy accused of punching wife in face after visit to winery

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (WFLA) — A Miami-Dade deputy is now on the wrong side of the law following an arrest related to a domestic violence incident with his wife, an affidavit said.

Anthony Zayas, 39, is facing charges of battery after he was involved in a verbal dispute with his wife in their vehicle after a visit to the Schnebly Redland's Winery & Brewery in Homestead.

The affidavit said when the dispute escalated, Zayas punched and slapped his wife in the face several times. Zayas "forcefully" pushed her out of the passenger side door, causing her to "violently" hit the ground when she tried to get out of the car.

The victim called police for help and was transported to a nearby hospital with abrasions to her shoulder, face and hands, bruises on her upper lip and shoulder and a fractured tooth, according to the affidavit.

In a statement obtained by NBC affiliate WTVJ, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said:

I am angered and deeply disappointed by the arrest of one of my deputies for domestic violence. There is absolutely no place in this agency, or in our profession, for individuals who engage in such behavior. Law enforcement officers must be examples of integrity, respect, and accountability — both in uniform and in their personal lives. To the victims of domestic violence, I am fully committed to standing with you and supporting you.

Court records show Zayas was charged with two counts of battery following his arrest on April 6. He bonded out of jail on Monday and was ordered to stay away from the victim.
