EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Two heroic barbers came to the rescue last week after a child almost ran into traffic in East Hartford, Connecticut.

According to police, the two barbers, Osvaldo Lugo and Rafael Santana, of Looks Sharp Barbershop, were cutting customers' hair when they saw a child running in the street.

The child was running toward a busy intersection of cars on Main Street. The two men ran outside the store and chased after the kid, scooping him up just before he reached the intersection.

The barber shop is located on the corner of Brown and Main, which is usually a busy spot with traffic from Pratt Whitney, Coca-Cola facilities, and an on-ramp to I-84.

"This corner right here is busy and dangerous; it's not a corner that a toddler should be on. This weekend, there was an accident here," Lugo said.

One of the barbers posted about the experience on Instagram.

"This was a scary experience, I'm still a little shaken up!" he said in an Instagram post.

It took Lugo a few minutes to find the parents. He said the mother was at a bus stop and didn't realize her child was gone.

"Mom lost track for one quick second; it happens. It's happened to me before. The structure of this building in the bus stop you can hardly see, so she was shocked and embarrassed at the same time but also thankful."

Reflecting on the incident, Andrew Ganci from Rocky Hill emphasized the importance of parental vigilance. "We've got to realize, when we sign up to be parents, we have to really watch out for our kids," Ganci said.

Despite his heroic actions, Lugo humbly insists he was in the right place at the right time.

"I didn't think about it. I just ran out the door," said Lugo. "Thankfully, I was there in time to get her."

East Hartford police said they're grateful for everyday heroes like these two men.
