CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) -- Clearwater Marine Aquarium welcomed a new resident and guests will soon be able to meet and even name the sea creature.
On Tuesday, the CMA announced its resident is a new species for the aquarium -- an Octopus vulgaris, also known as the common octopus. Found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Gulf of Mexico, octopuses are versatile at adapting and thriving in diverse marine ecosystems.
Known for their camouflage abilities, the common octopus can be "fascinating to watch as specialized skin cells called 'chromatophores,' allow it to change its color, pattern and texture to blend in with its surroundings to help protect it from predators," CMA said.
The common octopus' life cycle is typically only one to two years; however, they undergo rapid growth during that type, reaching an arm span that can extend up to 3 feet wide with its body and tentacles weighing up to 14 pounds.
As the octopus gets acclimated to its new habitat, CMA guests will have the opportunity to help choose the name for the octopus when they visit the aquarium in the next few weeks.
"At CMA, enrichment activities for the Octopus vulgaris will be carefully designed to stimulate its natural behaviors and cognitive abilities," Vice President of Zoological Care Kelly Martin said. "These include puzzle toys that encourage problem-solving skills and mimic natural hunting scenarios, ensuring both physical and mental well-being," said Martin.
