MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A vigil was held for the 19-year-old swimmer who drowned after saving his little sister from a rip current on Key Biscayne.

The family of the victim said the teen had gotten into the water with his friends and little sister when the group got caught in the current. He was able to push his sister ashore before disappearing into the water.

On Saturday, family and friends of Victor Enrique Castaneda, Jr. gathered for a candlelight vigil in Miami Beach after his devastating death last Saturday.

According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, just three hours before officers would've suspended their search efforts, a person raking the beach on Tuesday found a human head washed ashore.

Officials positively identified the remains as Castaneda on Friday.

During the ceremony, fireworks were set off and two Miami-Dade fire rescue boats shot water into the air to honor the teen.

“My brother was an amazing person and to know him was to love him,” a family member told WTVJ. “I find comfort in knowing that maybe he was too good for this world.”

According to Miami Beach police, Castaneda's death remains under investigation.
