TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Josue Gaston was stuck with a tree on the house he rented and a U-Haul with nowhere to go.
"Something's gotta be done," he said. "My family's not going to live on the street."
He said the landlord he rented from for five years, a nationwide rental company called Invitation Homes, gave them the runaround about fixing the house or moving them.
"They got somebody to come check the roof," Gaston said. "They only thing they did is just tarp it.
"The only reason why that tree is almost trimmed is because I went out of my money to Lowe's and bought a chainsaw and tried to clean it out so you know people can use the sidewalk and see if we can make it a little bit easier."
Gaston said they were told they would move earlier this week, but when the day came, he said the house was no longer available.
The next day, as they continued to pack their U-Haul, they knew they'd Better Call Behnken.
Consumer Investigator Shannon Behnken reached out to the corporate headquarters and was told they would look into this.
The next day, a spokeswoman explained local vendors were busy with work from the storm and sent this statement:
"Unfortunately, as with many homes in the Tampa area damaged in the storm, the new home also required a few repairs before we could move the resident there. Those repairs have now been completed, and the resident has now signed a new two-year lease agreement for this new home."
Behnken checked back in with the Gastons, as they unloaded their U-Haul at a new home and found them in much better spirits.
"We didn't know where we were going to go until you guys got involved and then hey, a couple hours later, here you go," Gaston said. "They gave us an address. everything was fixed, so hey, I appreciate it."
