HUDSON, Fla., (WFLA) — Starting Saturday, Nov. 16, help is coming to neighbors in more rural parts of the area struggling with access to healthy food in the wake of the hurricanes.

Different D-SNAP cites are opening up in counties to help meet that need.

There is one opening up in Pasco County on Denton Avenue. This is for people who need food assistance but are not already receiving it through SNAP.

The Disaster Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program is kicking in gear at the Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter in Pasco County.

It's important to note that D-SNAP is only for people who are not receiving food assistance through regular SNAP.

"It is available to folks who might not normally be eligible for SNAP," said Cindy Long with the USDA in an interview in October. "They've lost income. They've had damage to property. They've had to relocate with all of the associated expenses, or in some cases even just losing their food due to power outages or flooding."

If you already receive help through SNAP, officials are asking that you do not go to the on-site D-SNAP location.

For those looking to become registered through the Disaster Program, the Department of Children and Families asks that you pre-register online.

Online pre-registration will open on the first day of each event and close on the last day.

Pasco County's site in Hudson will be in operation from Nov. 16 to Nov. 18 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

People will be interviewed either by phone or in-person. Those who were approved during a phone interview for D-SNAP will get their EBT card by mail.
