KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (WFLA) — An investigation was launched Tuesday morning after a person raking the beach on Key Biscayne, a barrier island just east of Miami, reportedly came across a human head.
Miami-Dade Police said the person found the head around 8:30 a.m. after it washed ashore near Crandon Boulevard. The beachgoer immediately called authorities following the discovery.
Aerial footage from NBC 6 Miami's chopper showed detectives at the scene Tuesday as they examined the remains, which they confirmed to be human.
A section of the beach behind the Key Colony II Ocean Sound condominium building was closed off due to the investigation.
Officials have not confirmed whether the head belonged to a man or a woman, nor how long the person appeared to have been dead.
Authorities said the medical examiner will be working to identify the remains while homicide detectives investigate further.
No additional details were immediately available.
