OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — An inattentive driver was caught on a dash camera crashing into several other drivers on an Ohio interstate earlier this week.
It was just before 7 a.m. Wednesday on State Highway 47 near Oklahoma City when a dashboard camera from a semi-truck involved caught the crash on video.
According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, the driver of a white pick-up truck was looking down while driving and caused a multi-vehicle crash with a semi and eight vehicles. The driver misjudged the distance between him and the car in front, causing the pileup.
“The white pickup hits the SUV in front and then swerves over, hitting the semi, and ripping the semi’s passenger side wheel off so the semi driver had no steering,” the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
Two people had to be transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
"The Oklahoma patrol would like to remind everyone again to be vigilant and also to be aware of your surroundings inside the vehicle and outside," said Preston Cox with OHP.
Trooper Cox said usually accidents like this one don't end so lucky.
"More times than not, when dealing with multi-vehicle collisions, there are injuries. And specifically, you know, a lot of times they can be fatal," said Cox.
OHP said they see several multi-car accidents a week, especially during rush hour. They said it's important to limit any distractions.
"First and foremost is to put your cell phone down. Limit interior and exterior distractions, cell phones, radio," said Cox. "You need to focus more on driving while we're in the vehicle rather than all the other distractions that can partake while we're driving."
Troopers also want you to watch out for people riding motorcycles and for objects in the road.
